Scientific Benefits of Meditation

There an experiment was conducted with two groups of people from high-tech industry. One group was instructed to meditate for a few minutes a day for eight weeks. Another control group was left alone without such instruction. The brainwaves of all people who participated in the experiment were recorded three times. First time it was recorded in the beginning of experiment. Second time it was recorded at the end of the experiment. The third time brainwaves were recorded four month after the experiment. These measurements showed that people who have meditated for eight weeks have brainwave patterns that correspond to calmer and happier state.
Other studies have shown that meditation improves not only psychological state of a person but also physiological condition. For example regular meditation can help to reverse heart disease. Meditation can release pain and improve immune system. Here is a specific example that was published in journal Stroke. African-American people have twice as much risk to die from cardiovascular disease than white people.
So the experiment was conducted with 60 African-Americans who had atherosclerosis. They practiced meditation for six to nine months. Those who meditated showed significant decrease in the hardening of their arteries. Whereas another control group of people who did not meditate showed increase in hardening the arteries. That study showed that meditation could potentially bring decrease of risk of heart attack by 11 percent and decrease of strokes by 15 percent.
